25G PON New Progress: BBF Sets Out To Develop Interoperability Test Specifications

Beijing time on October 18th, the Broadband Forum (BBF) is working on adding 25GS-PON to its interoperability testing and PON management programs. 25GS-PON technology continues to mature, and the 25GS-PON Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) group cites a growing number of interoperability tests, pilots, and deployments.

"The BBF has agreed to begin work on the interoperability testing specification and YANG data model for 25GS-PON. This is an important development as interoperability testing and the YANG data model have been critical to the success of each previous generation of PON technology, And ensure future PON evolution is relevant to multi-service needs beyond current residential services." said Craig Thomas, vice president of strategic marketing and business development at BBF, the communications industry's leading open standards development organization dedicated to accelerating broadband innovation, standards and ecosystems system development.

To date, more than 15 leading service providers around the world have announced 25GS-PON trials, as broadband operators strive to ensure the bandwidth and service levels of their networks to support the development of new applications, growth in network usage Growth, access to millions of new devices.

For example, AT&T became the first operator in the world to achieve 20Gbps symmetrical speeds in a production PON network in June 2022. In that trial, AT&T also took advantage of wavelength coexistence, allowing them to combine 25GS-PON with XGS-PON and other point-to-point services on the same fiber.

Other operators conducting 25GS-PON trials include AIS (Thailand), Bell (Canada), Chorus (New Zealand), CityFibre (UK), Delta Fiber, Deutsche Telekom AG (Croatia), EPB (US), Fiberhost (Poland) , Frontier Communications (US), Google Fiber (US), Hotwire (US), KPN (Netherlands), Openreach (UK), Proximus (Belgium), Telecom Armenia (Armenia), TIM Group (Italy) and Türk Telekom (Turkey) .

In another world first, following a successful trial, EPB launched the first community-wide 25Gbps internet service with symmetrical upload and download speeds, available to all residential and business customers.

With the growing number of operators and suppliers supporting 25GS-PON development and deployment, the 25GS-PON MSA now has 55 members. The new 25GS-PON MSA members include service providers Cox Communications, Dobson Fiber, Interphone, Openreach, Planet Networks and Telus, and technology companies Accton Technology, Airoha, Azuri Optics, Comtrend, Leeca Technologies, minisilicon, MitraStar Technology, NTT Electronics, Source Optoelectronics, Taclink, TraceSpan, ugenlight, VIAVI, Zaram Technology and Zyxel Communications.

Previously announced members include ALPHA Networks, AOI, Asia Optical, AT&T, BFW, CableLabs, Chorus, Chunghwa Telecom, Ciena, CommScope, Cortina Access, CZT, DZS, EXFO, EZconn, Feneck, Fiberhost, Gemtek, HiLight Semiconductor, Hisense Broadband, JPC, MACOM, MaxLinear, MT2, NBN Co, Nokia, OptiComm, Pegatron, Proximus, Semtech, SiFotonics, Sumitomo Electric, Tibit Communications and WNC.
